Number of suicides increases in Guatemala

In 2008 around 736 suicides occurred in Guatemala, 109 more than in 2007. On average, there are 2 suicides per day.

Guatemala reported 5.26 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.96 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 736 recorded suicide cases in 2008, 552 were men suicides and 184 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 8.11 per 100,000 men and for women 2.66 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Guatemala. However, in Guatemala in 2008 there were there were 6,292 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 8.5 homicides per suicide.
