Suicides per country
Every year close to 800 000 people take their own life. Suicide is a serious public health problema in all regions of the world. In fact, Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds globally.
The data show suicide is about three times more common in men than in women. Depression, alcohol use disorders and other mental disorders are link with suicide but also happen in moments of crisis like relationship break-up or chronic pain and illness. Suicide is a major taboo in many societies and for this the availability and quality of data on suicide is poor.
Ingestion of pesticide, hanging and firearms are among the most common methods of suicide.
There are a number of measures that can be taken to prevent suicide and suicide attempts.
