Number of suicides increases in Zambia

In 2012 around 950 suicides occurred in Zambia, 21 more than in 2011. On average, there are 3 suicides per day.

Zambia reported 6.43 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.87 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 950 recorded suicide cases in 2012, 728 were men suicides and 222 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 10.05 per 100,000 men and for women 2.96 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Zambia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 885 homicides in Zambia, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.1 suicides.
