Number of suicides increases in Zambia

In 2011 around 929 suicides occurred in Zambia, 30 more than in 2010. On average, there are 3 suicides per day.

Zambia reported 6.48 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.82 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 929 recorded suicide cases in 2011, 712 were men suicides and 217 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 10.17 per 100,000 men and for women 2.99 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Zambia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 863 homicides in Zambia, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.1 suicides.
