Number of suicides increases in Uruguay

In 2010 around 552 suicides occurred in Uruguay, 40 more than in 2009. In Uruguay, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Uruguay reported 16.25 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.89 suicides per 100,000 people.

Uruguay is a country with a high rate of suicide.

Of the 552 recorded suicide cases in 2010, 426 were men suicides and 126 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 26.36 per 100,000 men and for women 7.24 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Uruguay suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 205 homicides in Uruguay, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.7 suicides.
