Suicides increase in Syria

In 2012 occurred 527 suicides in Syria. This year, 32 more people committed suicide than in 2011. In Syria, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Syria had 2.33 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.87 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Syria has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 527 recorded suicide cases in 2012, 426 were men suicides and 101 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 3.73 per 100,000 men and for women 0.9 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Syria suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 463 homicides in Syria, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.1 suicides.
