Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate

By 2011, suicides in Sri Lanka increased by 582 people to at 6,368 suicides In 2011, on average 17 Sri Lankans committed suicide every day.

In Sri Lanka there were 31.22 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.82 suicides per 100,000 people.

Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 6,368 recorded suicide cases in 2011, 5,068 were men suicides and 1,300 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 51.16 per 100,000 men and for women 12.39 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Sri Lanka suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 732 homicides in Sri Lanka, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 8.7 suicides.
