In 2010 around 5,786 suicides occurred in Sri Lanka, 212 more than in 2009. In 2010, on average 16 Sri Lankans committed suicide every day.
Sri Lanka reported 28.56 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.89 suicides per 100,000 people.
Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 5,786 recorded suicide cases in 2010, 4,570 were men suicides and 1,215 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 46.34 per 100,000 men and for women 11.69 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Sri Lanka suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 763 homicides in Sri Lanka, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 7.6 suicides.
