Number of suicides increases in Portugal

In 2012 around 1,076 suicides occurred in Portugal, 58 more than in 2011. On average, there are 3 suicides per day.

Portugal reported 10.14 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 9.87 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 1,076 recorded suicide cases in 2012, 859 were men suicides and 217 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 16.98 per 100,000 men and for women 3.91 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 122 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 8.8 suicides.
