Suicides increase in Portugal

In 1990 occurred 870 suicides in Portugal. This year, 123 more people committed suicide than in 1989. On average, there are 2 suicides per day.

Portugal had 8.7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 14.95 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Portugal has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 870 recorded suicide cases in 1990, 642 were men suicides and 228 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 13.3 per 100,000 men and for women 4.4 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 155 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 5.6 suicides.
