Number of suicides increases in Papua New Guinea

In 2012 around 633 suicides occurred in Papua New Guinea, 19 more than in 2011. In Papua New Guinea, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Papua New Guinea reported 8.52 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.87 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 633 recorded suicide cases in 2012, 480 were men suicides and 153 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 11.49 per 100,000 men and for women 3.98 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Papua New Guinea. However, in Papua New Guinea in 2012 there were there were 713 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.1 homicides per suicide.
