Suicides decreased in Papua New Guinea

In 2011 around 614 suicides occurred in Papua New Guinea, 42 less than in 2010. In Papua New Guinea, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Papua New Guinea reported 8.71 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.82 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 614 recorded suicide cases in 2011, 473 were men suicides and 141 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 11.65 per 100,000 men and for women 3.75 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Papua New Guinea. However, in Papua New Guinea in 2011 there were there were 713 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.2 homicides per suicide.
