In 1991 around 1,142 suicides occurred in Lithuania, 173 more than in 1990. In 1991, on average 3 Lithuanians committed suicide every day.
Lithuania reported 30.8 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 15.11 suicides per 100,000 people.
Lithuania has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 1,142 recorded suicide cases in 1991, 921 were men suicides and 221 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 52.6 per 100,000 men and for women 11.3 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Lithuania suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 214 homicides in Lithuania, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 5.3 suicides.
