Latvia has a very high suicide rate

In 1996 around 926 suicides occurred in Latvia, 98 less than in 1995. On average, there are 3 suicides per day.

Latvia reported 37.7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 15.06 suicides per 100,000 people.

Latvia has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 926 recorded suicide cases in 1996, 745 were men suicides and 181 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 65.8 per 100,000 men and for women 13.7 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Latvia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 268 homicides in Latvia, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.5 suicides.
