Latvia has the highest suicide rate in the world

In 1993 around 1,099 suicides occurred in Latvia, 178 more than in 1992. In 1993, on average 3 Latvians committed suicide every day.

Latvia reported 42.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 15.86 suicides per 100,000 people.

Latvia has the highest suicide rate in the world.

Of the 1,099 recorded suicide cases in 1993, 867 were men suicides and 232 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 73 per 100,000 men and for women 16.9 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Latvia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 387 homicides in Latvia, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.8 suicides.
