In Japan there were 17.6 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 15.06 suicides per 100,000 people.

Japan has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 22,138 recorded suicide cases in 1996, 14,853 were men suicides and 7,285 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 24.1 per 100,000 men and for women 11.4 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Japan suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 652 homicides in Japan, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 34 suicides.
