In 1995 around 21,420 suicides occurred in Japan, 497 more than in 1994. In 1995, on average 59 Japanese committed suicide every day.

Japan reported 17.1 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 15.58 suicides per 100,000 people.

Japan has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 21,420 recorded suicide cases in 1995, 14,231 were men suicides and 7,189 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 23.1 per 100,000 men and for women 11.2 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Japan suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 724 homicides in Japan, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 29.6 suicides.
