In 1991 around 4,453 suicides occurred in Italy, 51 more than in 1990. In 1991, on average 12 Italians committed suicide every day.
Italy reported 7.8 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 15.11 self-harm per 100.000 people.
Italy has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 4,453 recorded suicide cases in 1991, 3,206 were men suicides and 1,247 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 11.6 per 100,000 men and for women 4.3 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Italy suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 1,938 homicides in Italy, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.3 suicides.
