Number of suicides increases in Ireland

In 1996 around 408 suicides occurred in Ireland, 5 more than in 1995. In Ireland, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Ireland reported 11.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 15.06 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Ireland, has a relatively low rate of suicide per inhabitants.

Of the 408 recorded suicide cases in 1996, 345 were men suicides and 63 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 19.1 per 100,000 men and for women 3.4 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Ireland suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 42 homicides in Ireland, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 9.7 suicides.
