Number of suicides increases in Iceland

In 1996 around 33 suicides occurred in Iceland, 6 more than in 1995.

Iceland reported 12.3 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 15.06 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Iceland, has a relatively low rate of suicide per inhabitants.

Of the 33 recorded suicide cases in 1996, 28 were men suicides and 5 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 20.8 per 100,000 men and for women 3.7 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Iceland suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 1 homicides in Iceland, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 33 suicides.
