In 1991 occurred 1,493 suicides in Finland. This year, 19 fewer people committed suicide than in 1990. In 1991, on average 4 Finns committed suicide every day.

Finland had 29.8 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 15.11 suicides per 100,000 people.

Finland has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 1,493 recorded suicide cases in 1991, 1,190 were men suicides and 303 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 48.9 per 100,000 men and for women 11.7 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Finland suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 154 homicides in Finland, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 9.7 suicides.
