In 1996 around 551 suicides occurred in Estonia, 44 less than in 1995. In Estonia, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.
Estonia reported 38.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 15.06 suicides per 100,000 people.
Estonia has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 551 recorded suicide cases in 1996, 439 were men suicides and 112 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 67.1 per 100,000 men and for women 14.7 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Estonia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 214 homicides in Estonia, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.6 suicides.
