Number of suicides falls in Costa Rica

In 2012 occurred 302 suicides in Costa Rica. This year, 14 fewer people committed suicide than in 2011.

Costa Rica had 6.5 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.87 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 302 recorded suicide cases in 2012, 260 were men suicides and 42 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 11.1 per 100,000 men and for women 1.8 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 2012 there were there were 407 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.3 homicides per suicide.
