Suicides increase in Costa Rica

In 2011 occurred 316 suicides in Costa Rica. This year, 5 more people committed suicide than in 2010.

Costa Rica had 6.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.82 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 316 recorded suicide cases in 2011, 263 were men suicides and 53 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 11.3 per 100,000 men and for women 2.3 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 2011 there were there were 474 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.5 homicides per suicide.
