By 1996, suicides in Bulgaria increased by 93 people to at 1,526 suicides In 1996, on average 4 Bulgarians committed suicide every day.

In Bulgaria there were 18.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 15.06 suicides per 100,000 people.

Bulgaria has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 1,526 recorded suicide cases in 1996, 1,111 were men suicides and 415 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 27.2 per 100,000 men and for women 9.7 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Bulgaria suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 438 homicides in Bulgaria, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.5 suicides.
