In 1989 occurred 1,898 suicides in Austria. This year, 47 more people committed suicide than in 1988. In 1989, on average 5 Austrians committed suicide every day.

Austria had 24.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 14.93 suicides per 100,000 people.

Austria has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 1,898 recorded suicide cases in 1989, 1,313 were men suicides and 585 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 36.1 per 100,000 men and for women 14.7 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
